The two photos above is what No. 18 will look like for our excurison

The above photos of Alco 2-8-0 No. 18 in excursion service on the Grand Canyon Railroad out of Williams, Arizona. Steam locomotives No. 18 & 20 arrived in Walsenburg on January 28 from Denver on the Union Pacific on flat bed freight cars. On January 31, the SL&RG operated a special daylight train from Alamosa to Walsenburg to pick up the steam locomotives and bring them to La Veta. At La Veta the flat cars carring No. 20 was set out and the train continued on to Alamosa with No. 18 and her tender and the tender for No. 20. Then on February 1 the regular freight picked up No 20 and brought it to Alamosa. No. 18 is being relettered with the flying "Rio Grande" and renumbered to a DRGW series number. Trains Unlimited, Tours will have the honor of running the first excursion up to La Veta Pass with this engine. This will be your onloy opportunity to ride and photograph former No. 18 pulling a special photo freight. Steam locomotive No. 1744 will not be back in service until mid-summer and will pull our September 22-23, 2008 excursions. The photos below are of No. 1744 in excursion service between Alamosa and La Veta Pass during the 2007 season.

The above photos were taken by Christopher Muller on our 2007 excursions.

This will be a new twist to our 2008 La Veta Pass excursions. We have had quite a number of our railfans ask us to tie up the train at La Veta and return the Alamosa the next day. So, by popular demand this photo freight excurison will run from Alamosa to the small town of La Veta pulled by Alco No. 18 (Former number) and lettered Rio Grande for two days packed full of photo run-bys. Lodging will be at the La Veta Inn which is within walking distance of the railroad. In the evening we will have a night photo session. On May 4 we will reboard our charter photo freight and head back over La Veta Pass to Alamosa, again packed full of photo run-bys. This excursion is limited to 30 railfans only.
